    The Methow Valley’s skiing, scenery, and trails are world class and our extensive trail system provides for 120 miles (200+ kilometers) of skiing in peaceful, freshly groomed and uncrowded conditions. During the spring, summer and fall, many of the MVSTA cross-country ski trails become biking, hiking and horse trails. Even before the snow melts in the high country, miles of additional trails open up in the Methow Valley. There is a lifetime of exploring to be done in the North Cascades National Park, on Forest Service lands, and on state lands managed by the Department of Natural Resources and the Department of Fish and Wildlife.

    North Cascade Heli, founded in 1988, is based out of the Wilson Ranch in Mazama, Washington. The North Cascades of Washington state, also known as "The American Alps," are the most glaciated peaks in the continental U.S. Our location in the northeast corner of this range is a unique combination of longitude, latitude and altitude, giving us some of the finest snow conditions for heli-riding available anywhere. Within our 300,000-acre permit area on the Okanogan-Wenatchee National Forest, we can access a vast number of runs starting at altitudes between 7,000 to 9,000 feet. The vertical drop on our designated runs ranges from 1,500 feet to 4,000 feet. The terrain is an amazing potpourri of open bowls, steep glades and excellent tree skiing surrounded by immense granite cliffs and spires.
  23. Shafer Museum

    In 1891, 32 year old Harvard graduate named Guy Waring arrived in the Methow Valley, spotted a market in the handful of miners and ranchers living nearby and opened Winthrop's first general store. After two years of success, the store burned and Waring was forced to move back east to recoup his losses. Three years later he returned to rebuild his business, having enticed his reluctant wife to return with him by promising to build her a fine home. This carefully crafted log house, called "The Castle" by locals, is now the centerpiece of the Shafer Museum. 0wen Wister, author of The Virginian, visited here twice, drawing some of his story from the area.

    The Winthrop National Fish Hatchery (WNFH) is located on the Methow River near Winthrop, Washington. WNFH was authorized by the Grand Coulee Fish Maintenance Project, April 3, 1937 and reauthorized by the Mitchell Act (52 Stat. 345), May 11, 1938. The Mitchell Act authorized the Secretary of Commerce "to establish one or more salmon cultural stations in the Columbia Basin in each of the states of Oregon, Washington, and Idaho." WNFH is one of three mid-Columbia stations constructed by the BOR as fish mitigation facilities for the Grand Coulee Dam, Columbia Basin Project. The Complex is funded by the Bureau of Reclamation through a reimbursable agreement, and operated and managed by the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service.

    The Methow Valley is the birthplace of smokejumping. The initial experimental jumps were made during the fall of 1939 using the first Forest Service owned aircraft, an SR-10 Stinson. One revolutionary smokejumper is Fracis Lufkin, who took his first jump in the 1939 experiments. Smokejumping was developed in the late 1930’s as a means to quickly reach fires in remote road-less areas for initial attack
